Supporting St George's

The Church of England has 13,000 parishes [which contain 16,000 churches] and 42 Cathedrals.

According to the most recent statistics, the Church of England spends £1,000,000,000 a year on ‘operating’ the church, of which, £130,000,000 alone, is spent on repairing church buildings.  Income is derived from parishes [£750,000,000] and £215,000,000 from the Church Commissioners who administer Church assets.

In 2012 figures from the Church of England state that there were 28,300 Ministers licensed by the church of which 1,000 were Chaplains to Prisons, Hospitals and the Armed Forces.

Each Parish has to pay a ‘Parish Share’ to their Diocese towards Clergy costs and pension contributions.

St George's is within the Diocese of Lichfield which serves a population of 2.097 million, the 5th largest by population in the country.

The Diocese serves an area of 1,740 square-miles, the 9th largest by size in the country, and has 265 Benefices, 425 Parishes and 573 Churches.

The Diocese has 502 clergy in active ministry – 142 women and 360 men.  On average, each member of the clergy serves 3,660 people.

From the History page and the Restoring St George’s page you can see, in addition to paying our Parish Share and funding our own parish ‘running costs’, there is also a significant demand on our resources to repair and renovate St George’s Church building.

Above - unscheduled repairs to the water damaged roof beam across the south transept - October to December 2015.

We are also active in working within the community and very keen to extend this work as funds permit.  There are targetted events, for instance for the Lingen Davies Appeal, which, so far during 2015 has raised £1700.00.

There are a number of ways to support the work of St George's - one of which is regular giving on a weekly or monthly basis through the Sunday collection [for some of which we can claim gift aid] there are various other ways of supporting St George's.

You can support St George's fund raising events - such as the recent Christmas Fair - which raised £1,100 towards our funds.
